Talensi Area Women's Development Project

Improving lives and strengthening families by empowering women

Welcome to TAWODEP's (Talensi-Area Women's Development Project) website, thank you for taking the time to find our more about us and our members.  We hope you find our site interesting and informative - happy reading!

This photo is of some of our members outside our office with their recently acquired gifts of goats.

Since 2004 TAWODEP (Talensi-Area Women's Development Project), a community based organisation has been working with the poorest of the poor within the Talensi-Nabdam District of the Upper East Region of Ghana, West Africa to help and advise on ways to address gender imbalance and other issues important to them.

We empower our members in a variety of ways via strengthening and broadening their business and general knowledge and improving their standard of living, these include:-

- managing a micro-credit scheme, including teaching basic book keeping skills;

- training on social issues including misinterpretation of religious and cultural practices, violence within the home and the prevention of contracting HIV/AIDS;

- developing and broadening their income generating activities including soap production using sheabutter, making jewellery from recycling locally available materials;

- providing much needed income to members who are unable to work due to old age or illness via a goat exchange project.

We rely on funding to undertake these activities and thereby making a real, noticable and positive improvement to the lives of our members and their families.

TAWODEPs head office is located by the customs barrier in Balungu.  We currently work in 14 villages with more than 80 women groups and 550 members.

To help retain information provided during training women will often create songs to remember the key messages, these are often accompanied by dancing.
